I think a lot is driven by weight issues. If someone is worried


About moving up a weight without the strength for that class yet or if other wrestlers are above them on the team they may redshirt. In wrestling you see a lot more guys redshirt in the middle years if college versus other sports where most redshirt as freshman. There have also been cases where it appeared guys redshirted if they thought their weight class had a tough national group and they didn’t want to take on someone like Dake or Sanderson. You may also see a good freestyle or greco wrestler take an Olympic redshirt if they have a chance at making the Olympic team.
